This Is 4 My Dogz
I have two of the most amazing dogs in the world. Dooley is the oldest at around 3 years old; his mother was a Golden Retriever and father a Black Lab. However, he looks like a pure bred Black Lab: completely black and body size and shape. Vince is about 2 and is a mutt that looks a lot like a small German Sheppard. They are both male. It is so much fun to watch them play and wrestle around with each other. For those of you who don’t know my passion for UGA football, they are named after the legendary UGA football coach Vince Dooley. A week ago my younger sister Sarah got to meet the great coach and told him that I had named my dogs after him; he told her to tell me to treat them with compassionate love, no problem there. I even got a discount at my vet when I neutered and got shots for Dooley because she was also a fan.
Dooley is the wise one. It says in The Bible that the beginning of all wisdom begins with fear of Our Lord. On a smaller scale, I think that is Dooley’s relationship with me his master. I got him when was just 6 weeks old and trained him with tough love. If he did something wrong he immediately got popped on the nose. It took him a little while to grow out of the puppy stage, but now I can’t remember the last time he has done anything wrong or deserved a popping.
Dooley and Vince stay on the back porch during the day and serve as great watchdogs with their barking at strangers who occasionally walk by. Fortunately for them, I smoke a cigarette about every half hour and let them out to do their business and play. Despite the fact that I feed them appropriately, they have a weird habit of eating grass; I’m not sure what that is about. Their favorite part of the day is when I let them come inside to sleep upstairs with my wife and me. I let them in around 9:30 p.m. and they know exactly when that time is coming.
Vince is the bold one. He never cowers away from chasing squirrels, birds and other dogs. He doesn’t attack the neighborhood dogs; he just wants to sniff them out and make friends. Vince is affectionately known as ’pee-head’ because he follows Dooley around and pees in the same spot; he is so eager to mark his spot that he sometimes almost leans into Dooley’s stream. I didn’t train Vince as hard as Dooley because I figured Dooley would help me out. He has in many ways but Vince doesn’t have as much fear of me. Don’t get me wrong, Vince hates getting popped, but it must not cross his mind when he has a chance to chew through something while we are sleeping. Either that or he is willing to get popped for the pleasure of the moment. All in all, both are very obedient. They are both on voice command; one call and they coming running to me.
I hope they stay healthy and happy for many years to come. When they do pass away, I have already picked out the next two boys names: Balboa and Rocky.
